Saeron begins a royal commission meant to preserve the Crown's chosen image of order. Before the paint can settle, the distance between the official image and the truth begins to show.
“A painting is not the truth. It is the part of the truth someone has chosen to preserve.”
Eiran returns to Saeron's locked studio before dawn and finds a wound painted on Meran Vey's neck. Saeron does not remember painting it. The day before, Meran had no wound.
“A thin red cut began just beneath the left ear and ran down the neck, disappearing beneath the high collar.”
