Saeron paints for the Crown. Something appears on his canvas that he does not remember painting.
Saeron begins a royal commission meant to preserve the Crown's chosen image of order. Before the paint can settle, the distance between the official image and the truth begins to show.
“A painting is not the truth. It is the part of the truth someone has chosen to preserve.”
Before dawn, Eiran returns to the studio. Something on the canvas has changed, and Saeron cannot explain it.
Saeron returns to the palace, watching the people at court more closely than before. He cannot forget what he saw in the studio.
“For the first time, he thought that silence could also be a decision.”
Rhaevan meets with his council at night. As Averan Sorn delivers his report, the king watches the faces around the table.
Eiran heads into the Lower Canals to recover something he cannot leave in another person’s hands.
Eiran returns to Saeron’s studio. Among the paintings and scattered studies, he finds details he cannot explain.
Istran and Savel’s reunion turns desire into a contest over trust and power. Elsewhere, Lira fights to escape the place where Istran has erased her from every official record.
Eiran searches for Lira in the Lower Canals while Rhaevan receives a report about the night at Saeron’s studio.
Saeron is moved to another room. In a dream, he walks through ruins he cannot recognise.
Eiran returns to the witnesses as he searches for Lira. Meanwhile, a royal order reaches the warehouses.
